Educators know and have learned over time that all students can learn but not at the same rate and not all learn all the material at the same time. Public schools today are held accountable for student learning in the form of test results of students who take high stake exams to demonstrate what they have learned from the beginning of the school year to the time of the exam. In Tennessee all students are scheduled to be 100% proficient or advanced on all high stakes exams in all subject areas by the year 2014. I really look forward to this day when all of our students are proficient or advanced but my question is what will we as teachers do when we reach perfection? If all students are at the level of performance that we all have been striving to achieve will we need to be employed or are our students ready to enter the workforce or go to college and perform as we have prepared them? We all know that students do not learn at the same rates and that 2014 will come and go with some of the students we work with not reaching the 100% proficiency goal that has been set before them. Teachers will certainly need to keep working in order for students to continue to learn. Since we all know we will need to continue our work the question is how do we help students learn and grow yearly when they don't get it the first time? Students learn at different rates and some students need more time and support in order to achieve mastery of subject matter. Schools who truly want what is best for their students will find ways for them to get extra time and support during the school day regardless of what the school schedule, which in most schools is sacred, says will happen during the school day. Schools who want to improve student learning must be flexible enough to change what they are doing to meet the needs of the students. Extra time and support for students will enable students and schools to meet the benchmarks placed in front of them with regard to accountability from government and will also enable students to learn and learn at higher levels which is the goal of every educator.
